Memorial Funds for the Peyton/Payton Family
The Executive Committee of The Peyton Society of Virginia, Inc. (PSV), voted at its 2023 Annual Meeting to create a dedicated fund for Peyton/Payton Memorials.
Dedicated funds are established for a specific use, like memorials. Contributions to this dedicated fund are not tax deductible. The fund will be used for permanent memorials approved by the Executive Committee. A separate dedicated account will be created for this fund. It will not be part of the operating budget. The treasurer will report annually on the value of the fund.
The Executive Committee would like to memorialize more Peytons/Paytons in the future. Memorials are expensive but preserve the history and significance of the contributions made by the Peyton/Payton family in Virginia and elsewhere.
We hope you will contribute to preservation of the history of the family. To
contribute, make your donations to The Peyton Society of Virginia, Inc.; in the
memo line, please note Memorial Fund, and mail your check to our Treasurer,
Annette Race, 3520 Kilgallen Court, Ormond Beach FL 32174. Or you can preferrably donate via PayPal by using our website, https://www.peytonsocietyva.org/.
Thank you for helping to preserve the history of the Peyton/Payton family.
Over the years we have provided funds for the following:
In 1959, John Peyton Memorial Association members made contributions to
Aquia Church in Stafford County, Virginia, for the original parish hall, and a bronze plaque was placed in the building in honor of the Association’s first Chairman (equivalent to president now), Colonel Bernard Peyton. The John Peyton Memorial Association, formed in 1952, was the forerunner of The Peyton Society of Virginia. Aquia Church sits on land originally part of a Peyton land grant.
Association members participated in raising funds for a new bell at St. Andrew’s in Isleham, Cambridgeshire, in 1968, and they as well as the Society contributed money to assist with restoration of the Peyton tombs there. Over the decades, St. Andrew’s has been regarded by members as the “mother church” in England for the Peyton family, although we have also found connections to other churches there.
When Bernard Peyton Chamberlain died in 1983, the Society donated in his
memory to the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Society for the Bernard Peyton
Chamberlain Scholarship in the field of history at the University of Virginia. Also, a window roundel in his memory was installed in St. Andrew’s, Isleham,
Cambridgeshire, and many Society members donated individually to that cause.
In 1986, on one of the trips to England by Society members, “Cousin Charles”
(Derek Charles Wakehurst) Peyton was presented with a plaque expressing the Society’s gratitude for his lengthy bond with the Society and his participation in its genealogical endeavors.
In 1987, a pair of candle stands was given by the Society to Aquia Church in
memory of John Robert Williamson Moore, the Society’s first Genealogist (and father of Julia Moore, a current member of the Executive Committee and our Merchandise Manager). He and his late wife, Virginia E. S. Moore, are buried in Aquia Church’s cemetery.
Over the years, the Society has also made monetary donations for the upkeep of St. Andrew’s as well as the church at Stoke by Nayland, both of which have a number of Peyton tombs.
In 2003, a donation of $10,000 to St. Andrew’s was authorized because of its need for major repairs; smaller sums have been contributed in later years.
More recently, we donated to the building of the new Aquia Church parish hall; the amount donated was $5,000. Yearly, we contribute a small amount for altar memorials at Aquia Church’s Heritage Sunday service. As well, individual Society members contribute to the plate offering.
In 2022, we installed an historical marker in Occoquan, Virginia, for Valentine
Peyton, the progenitor of the G Line. The cost was $5,555.
We are currently working on a cemetery headstone with bronze plaque for John Peyton (1691-1760) of Stony Hill, who was on the Vestry of Aquia Church at the time the present church building was finished in 1757, and who is buried in its cemetery. The cost is $9,362. We hope to have a ceremony and unveiling of this memorial at our next annual meeting in May 2024. John Peyton was the progenitor of the H Line. The John Peyton Memorial Association was established in his honor in 1952.
