PHOTO GALLERIES
The Photo Galleries shown in the Photo Gallery sub-galleries here-in are organized to correspond to the various Peyton/Payton, and related surname Lines in The Peytons of Virginia II Volumes One and Two published by the Peyton Society of Virginia (PSV), 2004, and the Additional Data that has been collected by the Society since their 2004 publication. Each photo will expand to a full version, with caption, when the cursor is clicked upon it.
Photos contained in sub-galleries herein have been contributed as a result of research by the Society, and most importantly, by its Members. They do not include photos already presented in Society publications. Photos are most useful for genealogical purposes when the subject matter can be correlated to a numbered individual within our related Peyton/Payton Line genealogies. Members should therefore submit photos in accordance with the following:
We can no longer publish all photos submitted, including multiple photos of the same individual, object, or place. Please, only submit photos of posed individuals; one each in youth and old age, in military uniform; wedding photo; tombstone; places; handed-down historical family possessions over 100 years old; and important original non-census genealogical documents in each Line, over 100 years old. All submissions are subject to space limitations, and review and approval.
The PSV is currently looking for a dedicated volunteer member coordinator to assist other members with photo submission and/or identification of existing unidentified photos, so please temporarily defer submissions of new photos or identification of existing photos in the Unidentified Photo Gallery until a volunteer is found. If you are detailed oriented, love solving a mystery, and have the time to devote to this on-going project...please contact the President.
Instructions: Please identify all photos, WITHIN THEIR JPG FILE NAME [see (6) below for how to submit photos], referenced to an individual's PSV genealogy Line and individual's number as assigned in the:
(1) PSV Peytons of Virginia 2004 book genealogy [i.e. "2004, HG Line, 2. Jacob Payton, b. 1787 (birth year); date photo taken or circa xxxx(year), xx(month) xx(day); tombstone, cemetery name as listed on Findagrave.com and FAG#; owner if photo is of an object or document (Bible Memorandum, Marriage Certificate, Marriage Bond, etc.), if found in a non-copyrighted publication-page reference, title, author, date published. Please also include place, town, state; photo credit if you do not "own" the photo (credit, name of owner), sent by (your name), #xxx (PSV Member #)"]. Do not submit photos that the owner doesn't want posted.
Or (2) Additional Data #70.docx [i.e. "AD #70, HG Line, 2. Jacob Payton, b. 1787...." and follow the remaining instructions under (1) above in this Gallery.]
(3) If the photo is of a spouse (who are not given an identifying number, themselves) of a "blood" Peyton/Payton, please identify it as follows using the example given above: [i.e. "2004, HG Line, 2. Jacob Payton, b. 1787 (birth year), his spouse Lois Hutchings, b. 1793 (birth year), ...." and follow the remaining instructions under (1) above in this Gallery.]
(4) If you have photos of individuals whose lineage is approved by the Society that do not appear in either the 2004 PSV book or Additional Data #70.docx, include the Line (i.e. "HG Line"), name, b. (mmddyyyy, town, county, state), d. (mmddyyyy, town, county, state), and follow the remaining instructions under (1) above in this Gallery.
(5) If the ONLY photo of a particular individual(s) you have is in a group photo, then the photo will have to be resubmitted in duplicate for each Payton/Peyton Line individual in the photo, with each respective individual identified (i.e. "2004, HG Line, 2. Jacob Payton, front row, 3rd from left", b 1787....") in their own resubmitted copy of the photo, and then follow the remaining instructions under (1) above in this Gallery. Reunion and group photos usually are not good choices to submit, as the individuals are harder to identify and to really see individual characteristics. Alternately, use your own pc photo editor to copy the photo, edit, and crop around the individual in the photo, and save it, so the individual photo submitted to PSV is only of that individual, but only if the ending image of the individual is clear .
(6) Change the photo's JPG FILE NAME by holding your mouse pointer over the file name at the bottom of the photo. At the same time, press the "F2" (edit key) on your computer. Make the changes you want to the file name, in accordance with the PSV Gallery criteria. Make sure the end of the photo file name still has ".jpg" as the file extension after you make your changes, or the edited photo will not be usable. Caution: You should save a backup copy of the original photo, before you try to make changes to its file name.
(7) All photos submitted for publication in the PSV Photo Gallery section should be sent to [email protected], as an attachment in jpg format (please do not include the photo in the body of the email); one photo attachment per each email. The Subject of each email should read (using the example as above): "PSV photo 2004, HG Line, 2. Jacob Payton, b. 1787". Also include your name, address, and phone number where you can be reached, in each email. Volunteers will respond, as time permits.
(8) Whether or not you can fit all the above required data in the file name, the required data in its entirety and exact format described above should be included in the body of the email. The data in the body of the email will be cut and pasted into the Caption for the photo, so it must be complete and exact. This all must be done because the file names may vary in physical length between photo programs, and some of the data may be lost. File names are needed in case the captions ever become separated from their photos. Complete captions are needed in case file names become damaged or can't fit all necessary data. (Please refer to the A Line and other photo galleries for examples of how photos and their captions should look after the emailed photos have been reviewed and posted.)
(9) Please take care to proof that all commas, periods, spacing, and the format of the data that you submit is correct and consistent. It is critical that all submissions are able to be electronically sorted in chronological order by Line in our off site backup files. Incorrectly submitted data slows down volunteers providing the input process. Thank you!
PHOTOS IN THE GALLERIES ARE DEPENDENT ON BEING POPULATED BY OUR MEMBERS. WE ENCOURAGE ALL MEMBERS (AND NEW APPLICANTS AFTER THEIR APPROVAL TO THE PSV) TO SHARE THEIR HISTORIC GENEALOGICAL FAMILY PHOTOS.
